Steps You Can Take To Keep Your Home Safe From Theft

by Sherry Hart

There are several steps you can take to decrease chances your house will become a victim of theft. Thieves usually rob homes that do not have restrictions or obstacles in place to make the home hard to get inside. If a thief thinks someone is in the home, they will be less likely to try to rob from it, as well. Here are some precautionary measures you can take to make your home less desirable to thieves, keeping your belongings safe inside where they belong.

Get An Alarm System

Thieves will avoid homes that claim to have an alarm system in place. It is not worth the risk to try to break and enter into a home where authorities will be notified right away. Some alarm systems will be placed and then will give a silent alarm that would alert the alarm service to call the police department in your area. Other alarm systems will have a loud siren go off if someone tries to gain entry. The alarms will have a number keypad in place for people in the home to input a code to get inside without an alarm. Get A New Dog

If you have a dog in the home, thieves are less likely to try to get inside. The bigger the dog, the more chance you will be able to keep robberies from happening. Make sure you have a sign in front of your home that says "Beware of Dog" to alert others there is no reason to try to get on the property. Train your dog to bark if there is a stranger near your home.

Change It Up

You can deter thieves by changing the way you normally do things around the home. Change the times you leave and come back home every once in a while so there is no predictability about your habits. Someone may be watching to see when cars leave and come back. Leave a vehicle at home and car pool to confuse a potential thief.

Wave at your home when you leave everyday to give the impression that someone is still inside the home. Change the lights that come on and go off at certain times of the night by installing a light timer. Leave your television on at times when you are not home. All of these small things can make it look like someone is inside the home, keeping thieves from trying to enter.
